The words and times carry over, ready for an ASS style of your own. A few VTT-only settings, such as regions, vertical text and caption size, have nothing to map to in ASS and are dropped. ASS stores times in hundredths of a second, so each time is rounded to the nearest one.

What changes when you convert VTT to ASS

Not everything survives the trip. Converting VTT to ASS drops or flattens the following:

Ruby and pinyin annotations — this format has no way to attach text above other text.
Cue class names — they are not carried over.
Line and position settings — they are not carried over.
Millisecond-exact times — this format rounds them to coarser steps.
Regions — they are not carried over.
Cue width settings — they are not carried over.
Vertical writing — it becomes horizontal.
