No cues to show yet.

SMI files are common in Korea, and older ones are usually saved in EUC-KR, not UTF-8. The encoding is detected when you drop the file, and the VTT comes out as UTF-8, which browsers expect. An SMI can hold two languages at once. VTT has no separate language tracks, so both come out as captions at the same times, and the list below says what was left out.

What changes when you convert SMI to VTT

Not everything survives the trip. Converting SMI to VTT drops or flattens the following:

  • Cue class names — they are not carried over.
  • Inline formatting this format has no tag for.
  • Named styles — they become inline formatting on each line.

Questions

My SMI has Korean and English. Which do I get?

Both, as captions at the same times, which players show together. VTT can't keep them as separate tracks to switch between.

The Korean shows as strange characters.

Pick the encoding by hand in the reader's encoding box. EUC-KR is the usual one for older SMI files.

I need SRT instead.

Use SMI to SRT.
