Voice memos are where ideas, interviews and lecture notes go to be forgotten, mostly because listening back takes as long as recording did. Drop one here and read it instead. iPhone Voice Memos saves .m4a files, and those work as they are. So do the .m4a and .mp3 files many Android recorder apps make.
Questions
How do I get a voice memo off my iPhone?
In Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the three dots, choose Share and then Save to Files. Then drop the .m4a here, or open this page on the phone, tap the box and pick the file.
Does it work with Android recordings?
Yes, if the file is M4A, MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG or FLAC, which covers most recorder apps. A few older phones save AMR files, and those need converting to MP3 first.
How long a voice memo can I transcribe?
Up to 90 minutes and 95 MB. With Voice Memos' default Compressed setting, a 90-minute memo is far smaller than that. The Lossless setting makes much bigger files, so switch it off for long recordings.
Can I get timestamps?
Yes. Download SRT and each line carries its time in the recording, so you can find the part you need again.
Does it work with WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages?
Yes. Save the message as a file and drop it here, or see WhatsApp audio to text and Telegram voice message to text for how to save one.
