This format stores times as frame numbers, so it has no meaning without a rate. We don't guess one.

Choose EUC-KR if an older TV or player shows broken Korean characters. EUC-KR can't hold some characters, like emoji, and you'll see how many before you download.
SMI, also called SAMI, is the subtitle format a lot of Korean video still uses. Drop any subtitle file above and you get an SMI back. It reads SRT, ASS, SSA, VTT, SUB, MPL2, LRC, SBV, JSON and plain text, and from SRT nothing is lost on the way. Save it as UTF-8, or as EUC-KR for older Korean TVs and players.
What changes when you convert to SMI
From SRT, nothing is lost. From ASS or SSA, screen positions, karaoke timing, animation, drawn signs, actor names and comment lines are dropped, and named styles become inline tags. From VTT, positions, regions and voice tags are dropped. Either way, every line gets an end time. If you save as EUC-KR, any character it can't hold, such as an emoji, is written as a numeric code and counted before you download.
Questions
How do I convert SRT to SMI?
Drop the .srt above and download the .smi. Nothing is lost going this way: every line, timing and italic comes through.
Can I convert ASS subtitles to SMI?
Yes. Italics, bold, colour and fonts come across as SMI tags. Screen positions, karaoke timing, animation and drawn signs don't, because SMI has nowhere to put them, so heavily styled anime subtitles will look plainer.
Why do my SMI subtitles stay on screen until the next line appears?
The file is missing its end times. SMI has no end-time field, so a line only disappears when the file clears it with a blank cue. Leave those out and every line waits for the next one to replace it. This converter writes one wherever a line ends before the next one starts, so each subtitle leaves on time.
My TV shows broken Korean characters in the SMI file. How do I fix it?
Save it as EUC-KR. Some older TVs and players only read that older Korean encoding, and they show broken characters with the UTF-8 this tool uses by default. Pick EUC-KR under text encoding before you download.
What happens to emoji if I save as EUC-KR?
EUC-KR has no room for them, so each one is written as a numeric code like 😀. Some players turn that back into the emoji and some show the code. You'll see how many characters were affected before you download.
Can I make one SMI file with Korean and English subtitles?
Yes, with Merge subtitles. Drop both files, switch on "Keep the two files as separate tracks" and save as SMI. You get one file with two language streams, and your player can switch between them.
What's the difference between SMI and SRT?
SMI is written like a web page, with tags for colour and fonts and a class for each language, so one file can carry several subtitle streams. SRT is plain numbered text, one stream per file, which is why more software accepts it.
Is SAMI the same as SMI?
Yes. SAMI is the format's name, short for Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange, and .smi is its file extension.
