TXT to SRT converter

Convert TXT to SRT: a transcript with timestamps keeps its real times, and plain text gets timings worked out from reading speed.

People mean two different things by text to SRT, and this handles both. If your text is a transcript with timestamps, from YouTube, a meeting app or an interview tool, each timestamp starts a subtitle. Speaker names stay. Plain prose with no times works too: the text is split into subtitles and each gets a duration from its length, about 17 characters a second. Check those against the video.

What changes when you convert TXT to SRT

Nothing is lost

Everything TXT can express has an equivalent in SRT, so the converted file carries the same timings, the same text and the same formatting.

Questions

How do I convert a TXT file to SRT?

Drop the .txt above and download the .srt. Timestamps in the file are used as they are; without them, timings are estimated.

My transcript has a timestamp on its own line above each line of text. Does that work?

Yes. Each timestamp line becomes the start time of the text under it. That's how YouTube's transcript panel lays things out when you copy it.

Can I make subtitles from a script with no timings?

Yes, as a starting point, but the estimated timings won't match the speech. If you have the audio, MP3 to SRT gives you real timings instead.

Does it work with a YouTube transcript I copied?

Yes. Paste it into a .txt file, timestamps included, and drop it here. Or skip the copying: paste the video link into the YouTube transcript page and download SRT straight away.

Which timestamp styles does it understand?

A time at the start of a line, with or without brackets: [00:01:23], (01:23), 00:01:23.456 or 0:12. A time on its own line above the text works too, and so does a speaker name next to the time, which is how meeting and interview tools lay out their transcripts.

Can I turn a text file into VTT instead?

Yes. TXT to VTT works the same way and saves a WebVTT file for web players.
