ASS to VTT converter

ASS to VTT for anime-style subtitles in a web player: the words and times carry over, and simple styling comes with them.

No cues to show yet.

ASS can do far more than a web player can show. Named styles are turned into inline markup where VTT can hold it, so italics and bold survive. Animation, karaoke timing, drawings, layers and comments have no place in VTT and are dropped. The list below shows exactly what went.

What changes when you convert ASS to VTT

Not everything survives the trip. Converting ASS to VTT drops or flattens the following:

  • Speaker names — this format has no field for who is speaking.
  • Animations and fades — this format is static.
  • Clipping regions — this format has no equivalent.
  • Comments — they are not carried over.
  • Vector drawings — this format holds text only.
  • Effects such as scrolling and banners — this format has no equivalent.
  • Extra style columns — this format does not define them.
  • Inline formatting this format has no tag for.
  • Karaoke timings — this format has no way to store them.
  • Overlapping layers — they are flattened into one.
  • Exact positions — they move to the nearest of nine screen areas.
  • Named styles — they become inline formatting on each line.
  • Tags this format has no equivalent for.

Questions

Will the subtitles look the same as in Aegisub?

No. VTT has no fonts, outlines or moving text, so expect plain captions with the words and timing right.

Does SSA work too?

Yes. SSA is ASS's older version and converts the same way.

I need SRT instead.

Use ASS to SRT.
